Let's play guess that player. This is a former Yankee, traded by Brian Cashman for one of the most toxic players in baseball. He has consistently been one of the most likeable guys in the game, one of the best defenders in the game, and one of the most underrated players in the game. Who is this player? If you guessed Gio Urshela, you would be right! Urshela, even for the teams that he has played for, has been greatly undervalued. Given regular at bats, he has been a consistent .280 hitter, and one of the steadiest gloves in the field, but teams always seem to find a way to make him more of a platoon player. It makes no sense, and it also doesn't make any sense that the Yankees haven't jumped on the opportunity to get Urshela back in pinstripes. Being underrated as he is, Urshela doesn't cost a lot of money, and he is also a proven Yankee who hit one of the more memorable Yankee home runs in recent memory. You'd think the Yankees, who have a very unsteady third base situation right now, would jump on the opportunity to sign a former fan favorite like Urshela. Instead, the New York Mets seem like the most likely candidate based on what is being written and spoken in the media. The Yankees need to stop being a team who is interested and become a team that takes control because this is the final piece that they need to complete their 2024 lineup. Yes, you read that correctly! Gio Urshela is the single final piece that the Yankees need to complete their 2024 lineup. Let's look at a lineup with Urshela in it:
- Gleyber Torres 2B
- Juan Soto RF
- Aaron Judge CF
- Anthony Rizzo 1B
- Giancarlo Stanton DH
- Alex Verdugo LF
- Gio Urshela 3B
- Austin Wells C
- Anthony Volpe SS
Now, Urshela is not the final piece to complete the death star, but his addition would place the death star fully in the Yankees' organization. Apparently, Jasson Dominguez could make a quick recovery and come back in 2024, and the Yankees also have a player named Spencer Jones in AA right now who is 6'6, hits rockets, has a gun of an arm, and just stole 43 bases last season. Oh yeah! He's also a lefty bat. To be honest, the Yankees would have a lot of difficult decisions to make in terms of a lineup with both Jones and Dominguez in it. Since Jones probably won't be coming to the majors in 2024, here is the lineup in 2024 including Dominguez:
- Gleyber Torres 2B
- Juan Soto LF
- Aaron Judge RF
- Jasson Dominguez CF
- Anthony Rizzo 1B
- Giancarlo Stanton DH
- Gio Urshela 3B
- Austin Wells C
- Anthony Volpe SS
If this is the Yankees lineup with Dominguez, imagine what it would be if Jones is what he seems to be. The truth is that the lineup wouldn't be possible if the Yankees don't either get rid of Anthony Rizzo or Giancarlo Stanton. The obvious choice to go would be Giancarlo Stanton who is becoming more and more of a liability for the Yankees. Honestly, the Yankees should be looking into trades for Stanton at some point in 2024.
